Tennessee Tax Free Weekend 2014

This weekend is every shopper’s favorite holiday in Tennessee, Tax Free Weekend 2014! This weekend bargain hunters can take advantage of the state’s Sales Tax Holiday from 12:01 a.m. Friday, August 1 and until 11:59 p.m. Sunday, August 3. Shoppers can enjoy extended hours and savings of nearly 10% on clothing, school supplies and computers. This is perfect timing for back to school shopping.

Throughout the weekend consumers will not pay state or local sales tax on clothing, school and art supplies that cost less than $100 per item and computers that cost $1,500 or less.

There are specific guidelines for the tax-free items:

Clothing ($100 or less) Tax-Free Items

Belts, dresses, school uniforms, shirts, shoes, socks and underwear.

But not clothing accessories, protective equipment or sports equipment

School & Art Supplies ($100 or less) Tax-Free Items

Binders and folders, backpacks, calculators, crayons, pens and pencils, paper, rulers, scissors and watercolors.

School computer supplies, like CDs, printers and printer ink, are not exempt.

Computers ($1,500 or less) Tax-Free Items

Computers with a purchase price of $1,500 or less, not for use in a trade or business, are exempt from sales tax, but not computer parts and accessories that are sold separately, like monitors, keyboards, speakers, scanners or storage media.

Be prepared for long lines and plenty of traffic! Know what you want ahead of time, as browsing will be very difficult with all the crowds!

Take advantage of the sales at shopping centers in Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and Sevierville. You’ll find many name brand stores like Nike, Carters, Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic participating.
