Ober Gatlinburg to Host 2014 Winter Olympic Games

A total of 140 great athletes will be competing for gold medals at the end of the month during the 2014 Winter Olympics. The Olympic games will be held at Ober Gatlinburg from January 27-28, 2014.

2014 Special Olympics Details

This year’s Special Olympics at Ober Gatlinburg Ski Resort will be one you don’t want to miss! The lighting of the Special Olympic flame will happen at 9 a.m. on Monday. The awards ceremony is expected to begin at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

The events at the 2014 Special Olympics Winter Games will include:

  • Speed Skating
  • Alpine Skiing
  • Snowboarding

There are different categories for these competitions, based on age and ability level.

Admission to the event is free for all families who want to spend the day watching the games. The public should keep in mind that the skating rink and ski slopes will be closed during these Olympic games.

The Special Olympics Experience

The Special Olympics movement began in 1968 when the first games were held in Chicago, Illinois. The Special Olympics has over 14,500 registered athletes who compete in events throughout the year. Outside of winter sports, the Special Olympics offers track and field, basketball, golf, soccer, roller skating, volleyball and so much more.
