2. Experience a Pet-Friendly Smoky Mountain Hiking Trail

This is not only to protect the safety of your pup, but also as a way to protect the well being of the natural habitat that the animals in the park rely on.

However, that being said, there are a couple of spots in the Smoky Mountains where pets are allowed, and this allows owners and pets to enjoy a day in the mountains together.

These spots include:

  • Picnic Areas
All public roads and picnic areas are open to pets and families as long as dogs are kept on a leash that is no longer than 6 feet long. The dog must also be in the leash at all times.
  • Cades Cove Loop Road
Cades Cove is by far one of the most popular areas in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. With the rolling scenic views and peaceful atmosphere, there is no question that both pets and pet parents will love spending the day driving along the 11-mile loop road that circles the area.
From the comfort of your vehicle, guests will pass several historic cabins, open grassy fields, and you may even spot a few wildlife. However, park officials do stress the importance that your dog remain in your vehicle while visiting Cades Cove.
  • The Gatlinburg Trail
The Gatlinburg Trail is the only pet friendly Smoky Mountain hiking trail on the Tennessee side of the Smoky Mountains. Considered a short walking path, this trail is located next door to the Sugarlands Visitor Center, and it follows the outskirts of Gatlinburg. During this hike, guests will get to experience parts of both the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River and several historic home sites and buildings.
