This week's hike will be a moderate 5 miles with some off-trail. Off-trail means we may be climbing over and under obstacles, creek crossings, etc. We'll be taking a manway up Noisy Creek to the Old Settlers Trail where we'll see standing chimney, plane crash site, old home places. A refreshing wade across Little River at the Townsend Wye will be welcome at the end of this hike. We'll hike 7.5 moderate miles on Roundtop. This will be a shuttle hike. A strenuous hike of 13.1 miles will start on the AT at Newfound Gap and go all the way to Smokemont via Dry Sluice and Bradley Fork trails. A possible side hike to Cabin Flats will add 1.2 miles. Another shuttle hike for 6 moderate miles in the Big Creek area of the park. We'll hike Chestnut Branch to the AT and on down to the Pigeon River. Alternate meeting at Big Creek near the ranger station at 9:40 am. We visit Cataloochee Valley for this week's hike of 7 moderate miles. Boogerman Loop, Boogerman Trail, and Caldwell Fork Trail form a loop hike. There are MANY creek crossings, several bridges out, so water shoes are recommended. Possibility of seeing elk. We take Middle Prong trail in the Tremont area up to Indian Flat Falls and back. This is a moderate-strenuous 8 miles. Hiking by Middle Prong is always refreshing, but once we leave the creekside, the hike can become hot. A shuttle hike from Clingmans Dome on the AT to Indian Gap will be 6 moderate-strenuous miles. Climbing Mt. Collins is steep and there are LOTS of steps on this trail. If you have hip/knee problems, this is probably NOT the hike for you due to all the steps. The Tuesday hike this month will be 10 strenuous miles from Clingman's Dome on the AT to Silers Bald and back. This is a lot of down-hill and then up-hill on the return. Bring lots of water, trail lunch, snacks, etc. Dress for any weather as it can change quickly on the mtn. tops. We'll enjoy the variety of sights on Alum Cave Trail to the Bluffs. This is 4.6 moderate-strenuous miles. Creekside hiking for a while, Arch Rock, & Peregrine Peak are some of the highlights.
